Here are the 4 best trekking places out of many around Hyderabad which one must explore and enjoy the thrilling activities at the outskirts of the city.
Charikonda
Genre: Exploratory
Grade: Easy
Trek Duration: 7-8 hrs
Distance: 87 km from Kondapur, Hyderabad via Nehru Outer Ring Rd and NH765
Location: Gowramma Lake – Landmark for base of the trek
Charikonda is a village in the Amangal Mandal of Mahabubnagar. Beautiful Gowramma lake will welcome you, if you visit during July – November. The granite hills around this small village rise steeply to 100m from a ground-level near Charikonda. The more interesting part though is the thick vegetation that extends to its west for over 12 km. The western border of these hills is the famous Maisigandi Maisamma temple of Kadthal. A small Rama temple is located on a hillock near Govindaya Pally. Charikonda is known for its thick vegetation!
The target is to explore as much as possible in the hills near Charikonda. You can find the secret pond called as Manchileela Baavi, which is almost on top of the hill. The terrain contains lots of thorns, so be prepared for it. Based on the season, trekking can be under the hot sun which will make the trek even more difficult. You may have to scramble among the rocks too. Challenges include map skills, rural communication skills, water management, walking at a decent pace on rocky terrain, and keeping yourself entertained with nature and people.

Koilkonda Fort
Genre: Exploratory
Grade: Easy
Trek Duration: 4-5 hrs
Distance: 136 km from Kondapur, Hyderabad via Outer Ring Road
Location: Koilkonda
Koilkonda has an average elevation of 1525 ft. Koilkonda Fort is situated at Koilkonda in Mahabubnagar district of Telangana. This is one of the best one day trip and a trek for Hyderabadis. Koilkonda Fort is the erstwhile outpost of the Qutab Shahi dynasty situated on a hilltop. To reach the top, one needs to hike across a deep gorge on the west or a series of streams if coming through east before reaching a plight of steps that leads to the fort. To enter the Koilkonda Fort, seven gates have to be crossed. The first one spots an inscription of Ibrahim Qutab Shah that belongs to 1550 AD. Fourth gate leads to a dilapidated palace. There is also a mosque, an Idgah and a pond here. The Fort also has a ashurkhana dedicated to Bibi Fatima and is revered by both Hindus and Muslims.
Challenges include you getting tired, water management. You can explore this place till afternoon and you can reach Koil Sagar dam once you are done with the trek.

Khilla Ghanpur
Genre: Exploratory
Grade: Easy
Trek Duration: 5-6 hrs
Distance: 117 km from Kondapur, Hyderabad via Outer Ring Road
Location: Khilla Ghanpur
Fort Ghanpur is built on Hills in Ghanapuram. The fort is spread on rocky and hilly area of 4 Sq kilometers and there are fort buildings perched on the top most part of the hill. The fort was built by Kakatiya King Gona Ganna Reddy and is 26 Kilometers away from Mahboobnagar. The name of Ghanapuram Khilla came into existence from the name of Kakatiya Ruler Sri Ganapathi Deva.
Ghanpur Cheruvu is a large lake a little away from the fort. The Hills have excellent huge formation of rocks that also form chimneys and caves. The Fort also has few ponds as water sources. The vegetation is mostly shrubs with occasional Trees.The fort has beautiful rockscapes and greenery with two ponds which were used as drinking water supply for the fort army.
You can go for Hiking, scrambling and Swimming (depending upon the season),rappelling, rock climbing, caving, etc.. Challenges will be confusing route(during trek), water management and energy levels

Rachakonda
Genre: Exploratory
Grade: Easy
Trek Duration: 7-8 hrs
Distance: 88 km from Kondapur, Hyderabad via Outer Ring Road
Location: Rachakonda
Rachakonda Fort is a historic fort located in Rachakonda, Samsthan Narayanpur mandal, Yadadri Bhongir District. It was built by the Padmanayaka Velama King Anapotanayaka in the 14th century AD. Till that time the Padmanayakas had their capital at Anumagallu (Present Amangal). At around 1360 AD, the capital was shifted by Anapotanayaka from Anumagallu to Rachakonda where he built a strong fort.
You can go for trekking, go for bouldering, and explore a temple and the fort. The architecture and carvings on the walls are truly glorious and give you a glimpse into the 14th century. But what sweeps you off your feet is the view from the top of the fort. Right from the jungle to the rocks and pond, you’ll be able to see it all. Plus, you just cannot miss the sunset here.

- 2 liter water bottles(refillable – avoid disposables)
- Shoes with good grip(avoid flip-flops)
- Plastic covers or Mobile covers to protect Mobiles from rain.
- Suitable backpack to fit all the above.
- Trash cover for yourself and covers for wet clothes.
- Snacks and some energy bars
- Extra set of clothes as you get into pools. (as applicable)
